Welcoming Our New President

An Historic Appointment,
270 Years in the Making

In 2023, Minouche Shafik began her tenure as the 20th president of Columbia University, the first woman to hold the position in the University’s 270-year history. A brilliant leader dedicated to higher education’s role in addressing complex global challenges, President Shafik brings fresh perspective and energy to Columbia.

My vision of Columbia is of an institution that is a friend to our neighbors, an asset to this nation, and a beacon in this world.

President Shafik brings a wealth of experience from her career as a distinguished economist who for more than three decades has served in senior leadership roles across a range of prominent international and academic institutions.
